Mapping the Mind is awesome. April 27, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm a graduating Cognitive Science student at the University of California, San Diego. My 4 years of school were plagued by grousely complex terms for brain regions and an absolute lack of understanding of these areas within 3D space. If this book was given to me my freshman year, I would have gone through my Neuroscience classes with a solid foundation to build on. I recommend this book to all levels of understanding. It is riddled with facinating pictures of brain regions and their inter-connections AND within the text, we see how these connections give rise to our concious and subconcious world. The book is so invigorating that I read all 224 pages within a two night span even in lure of ever present anxiousness towards my current midterms. The first guys description is well endowed so look at that too!Have fun, Marko
One of the best books I've ever read!!! March 19, 2001 It is an absolut must!!! It will expand your knowledge on how our mind works. When the book finishes, you will be able to have a discussion with a brain surgeon!!! and correct him too....
Heap of confabulations January 25, 2001 10 out of 29 found this review helpful
This book is an amazing heap of confabulations, overinterpretations and sundry misleading manuevers. It takes the idea of "blatant nonsense effect" to the extreme. It is incredible that such a book can be published, and actually used as a teaching material. Few examples: 1) large parts of the brain are not active at birth -- a straightforward lie. 2) The putamen control activities like riding bicyvle -- a confabulation 3) "The caudate nucleus automatically prompts you to wash" -- a confabulation. ... and there are many more.

This is an excelent book to get an accurate overview about how te mind works. It covers a great variety of subjects, ranging from the phisical, electrical and chemical functioning of the brain, to the concrete disfuctions that psychiatric illnesses causes in every day life. It has lots of clearly explained examples.

I am taking psycology as a minor and this was our textbook. I thought it was going to be a bunch of neuro jargon and the such but this book was suprisingly delightful. It is conversational and gave many examples of real life patients. It explains how the brain works, how feelings are developed and how things in us and around us affects the brain. This book can be read by anyone with an interest about brain function and dysfunction. The best part is that it is such an easy read and doesn't get boring.
